Free breakfast, fairly clean hotel, stunning and lovely location to provide you with recommendations on what to do in the area. Overall a very good stay with great value for money. Updated and romantic rooms, magnificent views over the town and seafront. Bonus point for a minibar, central heating and an iron...

It's a real castello! Romantic, beautiful! Solarium on the roof is a bonus. Internet is good, although in the hall. No elevator, but it's not a problem. I think that in such a town as Santa Margherita Ligure such a hotel as La Vela is just perfect - for the flavour of the place.

La Vela was a wonderful hotel. It is situated well up the hill from the main square, so take a taxi if you aren't up for dragging your baggage uphill for about 10 minutes. We did find steps that provide a shortcut to and from the square. Our room was absolutely beautiful with a huge comfortable bed and a view of the village and bay. The hotel has beautiful gardens and solarium. The staff was very helpful, even if the staff didn't speak much English.

It is a beautiful place to stay, a real gem! Our room was spacious and nice with antique furniture. Bathroom was good, handheld shower a bit of a downside. Parking is a challenge.....tiny little parking lot for the amount of cars, so if you had to leave, other cars had to be moved to be able to get out. Breakfast got a little boring after a few days. Still I would recommend this hotel to couples without children who like a romantic place to stay, close to the busy center but without the noice (except for the train....).

The building was beautiful - fantastic staircase that makes you feel like you're in a movie. The staff, once you broke their guard were friendly and suggested a lovely restuarant for dinner during our stay. The hotel has an old-world colonial decrepidness. Breakfast was excellent and possibly one of the best on our 2 week European trip.
We opened the wardrobe which smelt of damp wee and so we closed it and never opened it again! The room was cramped with a view of the boring garden - we felt we were given this room because we were only staying one night. During the evening a vast rain storm began which continued well into the night - my girlfriend did not sleep at all due to the thundering water of a river/water treatment centre flowing outside which she thought was the rain and that we would be stuck in a crisis next morning. The staff were strangely distant and appeared to be engaged in other business on the internet while we were trying to check in and out. Breakfast thought lovely was disturbed by a badly behaved child who was not requested to be moved. Parking is as the very rich would expect - like a rollercoster at 45 degrees incline and three hairpin bends - not good in a rear wheel drive car after a rain storm.

The room was very spacious and the staff was incredibly welcoming; in addition to that, there was a microwave oven, a refrigerator, and glassware provided which was a nice touch.

Hotel has alot of "character", wth big, airy rooms.Parking can be a bit problematic but is free.Breakfasts were adequate and overall, apart from the climb up from the town centre it was an enjoyable stay.
Location of hotel is on a winding, busy road and needs care when approaching.Climb up to hotel from ST MARGHERITA centre is only small negative.

Having stayed in a castle was very cool and being able to sunbathe on the roof was great, plus the view was stunning. Would be very romantic for couples. Great air conditioning for the summer!
Although the view was good, it was very difficult to locate the place as it was incorrectly listed on google maps, sending us in the wrong direction. Plus the hotel did not seem to offer directions to counter- act the incorrect listing. The wifi was free, but you only seemed to be connect to it in the main foyer room, poor signal. The cleaning people also didn't replace toilet paper which was frustrating after 3 days. The breakfast was a bit poor, rock hard dinner rolls, cheap meats and the yoghurt was room temperature. Don't try to walk there, it's very steep and exhausting in the heat, plus there are no pedestrian paths in the area, so a bit dangerous- just get a taxi.
